NATURE OF PROBLEM::
Some people are particularly prone to ear canal dryness and irritation. Water and various irritants (hair spray or hair dye) may enter the ear canal. The ear canal cleanses itself by the movement of desquamated epithelium, like a conveyer belt, from inside membrane outward. Attempts to clean the canal with cotton application interrupt the self-cleaning mechanism and promote accumulation of debris by pushing it the direction opposite the movement of the desquamated epithelium. Debris and cerumen (earwax) tend to trap water into the canal; the resulting skin maceration sets the stage for invasion of pathogenic bacteria.
